OSIA History

The Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA) is the largest organization of Americans of Italian heritage in the North American Continent. The organization was founded in New York City on June 22, 1905.  The Founding Fathers were Dr. Vincent Sellaro and five of his compatriots; pharmacist Ludovico Ferrari, attorney Antonio Marzullo, sculptor Giuseppe Carlino and barbers Pietro Viscardi and Robert Merlo.

The original logo indicated “Ordine Figli D’Italia”.  Figlio means son; figlia means daughter and figli means children.  So the logo translation - Order Sons of Italy in America - was supposed to represent the children of Italy in America.  We are open to all Italian men and women – by birth, descent, adoption or marriage and we welcome Social members of all nationalities too.

On April 27, 1913, the Pennsylvania Grand Lodge was the third State Lodge to be Charted by OSIA. Over 470 local lodges and 50 junior lodges were eventually organized, making Pennsylvania the largest State Lodge.
